AAnalyzing the structure of mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) has the vital importance in forensic science and clinical applications. The principal aim of this project is to successfully and precisely evaluate the nucleotide sequences of mtDNA genomes as determined using modern laboratory instrumental techniques. The results obtained with an automated bioinformatics tool will be used to create the statistically necessary database within the pilot project for the residents of Canton Sarajevo and, afterwards, for the entire population of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This approach will assist in shortening the time needed to examine the entire mtDNA genome, increasing the accuracy rate for identifying the hotspot mutational regions, and decreasing the likelihood of human error. Precise visualization of polymorphism locations in the mtDNA genome contributes to a more efficient interpretation of the results. A mitochondrial genome database for the residents of Canton Sarajevo and for the entire population of Bosnia and Herzegovina is required. Furthermore, the current mtDNA analysis process needs to be revised in order to produce the accurate and useful results in regular clinical and forensic practice. This project is done in collaboration with the Alea Genetic Center and International Burch University in Sarajevo and is supported by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Youth of the Sarajevo Canton.
