Joint event - Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing and International Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering in Bosnia and Herzegovina - MEDICON'23 & CMBEBIH'23 was organized by the Society for Medical and Biological Engineering in Bosnia and Herzegovina (DMBIUBIH) in collaboration with partners, the Verlab Scientific Research Institute, the University of Sarajevo, the University of Banja Luka, and the University of Donja Gorica. The project was realised from September 14th to 16th, 2023, at the Swissotel Sarajevo location.

The conference serves as a platform that enables the exchange of knowledge and experiences among participants, including researchers, experts, and professionals. It also facilitates the connection of researchers with industrial partners, making a significant impact on the development of innovations, technology transfer, and the creation of new products and services in Bosnia and Herzegovina and around the world. The mission of the conference was to promote medical and biological engineering worldwide, especially in Southeastern Europe, in order to support the transition towards green digital transformation and the advanced application of artificial intelligence in these fields. The conference emphasized the importance of integrating digital technologies and AI in medical and biological engineering to enhance healthcare and research. It also established and strengthened ongoing scientific collaboration with foreign research institutions and scientists by connecting with the scientific diaspora of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This highly significant and prestigious global event brought together over 300 distinguished scientific, business, and political authorities from as many as 40 countries.

The ceremony was opened by Naida Kundurović, who greeted the attendees and announced an intriguing video journey through human evolution. She emphasized how technological advancements have provided people with access to the entire world through the internet and advanced technologies. On behalf of the member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denis Bećirović, Mirza Kršo addressed the audience, highlighting the importance of science as the foundation of societal and economic development, as well as the need for Bosnia and Herzegovina to become an active participant in technological progress rather than a passive observer. The Prime Minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nermin Nikšić, also underscored the significance of investing in research and development, especially in education as a crucial prerequisite for development and integration into modern society.

The Minister of Communication and Transport, Edin Forto, emphasized the challenges that events like these pose for the entirety of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also highlighted the importance of adopting new knowledge in the digital era, calling for increased investments in research that would contribute to society as a whole.

Stefano Ellero, Head of the Department for Cooperation of the European Union Delegation, emphasized the importance of digital transformation and innovation for social and economic development. He also highlighted the EU's support for the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as the need to create favorable conditions to promote this transformation.

The Federal Minister of Education and Science, Jasna Duraković, emphasized the significance of such conferences for society and highlighted the importance of investing in new knowledge to keep Bosnia and Herzegovina in step with global technological advancements. Adriana Velazquez Berumen emphasized the importance of using technological tools in medicine, while Prof. Dr. Lejla Gurbeta Pokvić underscored the significance of collaborative work among experts and highlighted the power of technology and innovation in creating a better future.

This conference represented a significant step for Bosnia and Herzegovina to stand out on the global stage of medical and biological engineering and to encourage further development and progress in these fields.
